Despite historically brutal winters, many Chicagoans have come to fear warmer temperatures. For as the mercury rises, so do crime rates. This weekend was no exception, as temperatures in the low 60s were met with heartbreaking violence: 43 shot and 5 killed since Friday.

Among those slain was 32-year-old Lenore Draper, who had just returned from an anti-violence rally when she was shot. The Chicago Tribune reports that she was found shot in the chest and arm outside her West Pullman home, possibly the victim of a drive by.

Also killed were a 17-year-old boy, a 21-year-old woman, a 22-year-old man and an 86-year-old man, who allegedly opened fire on an off-duty police officer’s wife during a dispute. Senior Editor Jamilah Lemieux appeared on The Reid Report last week to discuss the city’s troubling violence.
