In less than a week of selling lemonade and popcorn, 9-year-old Joshua Smith raised an admirable $3,000 for the city of Detroit. Smith, his family, and close friends came together to actualize Josh's dream of helping the economically-strapped city, and quickly gained national attention.

After his parents put up the initial investment of $100 to buy the items, which he sold in front of his family home, Joshua began receiving donations from as far as South Africa. "I heard the city was in crisis because the city is broke and I was really upset," he said. In honor of his achievement, the city council rewarded Smith with an award for outstanding achievement. He also received a $2,000 college scholarship from the Rosa L. Parks Scholarship Foundation.
