The Huffington Post's Len Levitt broke an intriguing story alleging that the New York City Police Department had planted spies inside the Reverend Al Sharpton's National Action Network headquarters in Harlem. And, as a result of learning about these developments, Sharpton has threatened to sue the city with legal action. According to Levitt, an NYPD informant was placed inside NAN headquarters to gather any possible information pertaining to any large-scale protests being planned in response to the acquittal of police officers involved in the murder of Sean Bell. Bell, who lost his life just hours before his wedding, was the latest campaign in the National Action Network's fight against police brutality in the city.
On May 3, 2008, the confidential informant attended a NAN meeting, and reported back to the NYPD's Intelligence Division, according to information that Levitt obtained from a police document marked "secret." Through the NYPD's head spokesman, Paul J. Browne, it was admitted that an "intelligence unit" was gathering information inside the National Action Network, but were not after "any dirt on Sharpton or his organization." Then, how can you explain the attempt at discrediting the current MSNBC analyst by insinuating that he's gay?
If Sharpton's threat turns into a promise, how will New York's "finest" respond to the legal suit?
