In Alabama, It Could Soon Be Illegal to Smoke in the Car With A Child

This week, Alabama’s Senate is expected to vote on a bill that would make it illegal for smokers to light up in the car with a minor inside, CNN reports.

HB 26 was passed last week by the state house. If the bill becomes law, no tobacco products would be allowed to be smoked in vehicles carrying passengers who are under the age of 19.

The ban would be effective regardless of whether the vehicle is moving or parked.

Anyone caught in violation of the law would be fined $100.

“We aren’t saying you can’t smoke, and we aren’t saying what to do with your body,” said state Rep. Rolanda Hollis how proposed the bill. “We just want to look out more for the kids.”

If lawmakers successfully pass the bill, Alabama will join California, Puerto Rico, Maine, Oregon and Virginia who have passed similar laws in reference to in-car smoking.
