Aly Raisman Says Call to Ban Gymnastics Leotards is Victim Shaming

Two-time Olympic gymnast Aly Raisman made a point to say she does not support the call to ban leotards in gymnastics as a form of prevention of sexual assault.

“I was recently asked if gymnasts should continue wearing leotards. Leotards r not the problem. The problem is the many pedophiles out there & the adults who enable them. By saying clothing is part of the issue, u are victim shaming/implying survivors should feel it’s their fault,” she tweeted on Sunday night.

Raisman is a survivor of sexual assault and testified against Larry Nassar, the former USA Gymnastics national team doctor, during his sentencing hearing in January. Nassar was accused of molesting over 200 girls and young women as far back as 1992.

During her testimony, she called out Nassar for his crimes.”Larry, you do realize now that we, this group of women you so heartlessly abused over so long a period of time, are now a force and you are nothing. The tables have turned, Larry. We are here, we have our voices, and we are not going anywhere.”

Raisman is using her voice to call for a reform to the system that allows for abuse like this to happen. She is making sure that the girls and young women who are the victims are not made to feel at fault. She filed a lawsuit against the United States Olympic Committee alleging that they were of Nassar’s abuse as it was happening.
