Andrew Gillum on DeSantis: ‘The Racists Believe He’s a Racist’

Gillum, DeSantis, debate

Mayor Andrew Gillum came out swinging against Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) in the second and last debate before voters head to the polls to determine Florida’s next governor.

The candidates squared off in the city of Davie on Wednesday where they discussed the economy, guns and health care.

Gillum confronted the congressman on his ties to White supremacists, neo-Nazis and the general racist rhetoric that’s surrounded his campaign.

“I’m not calling Mr. DeSantis a racist. I’m simply saying the racists believe he’s a racist,” said Gillum.

Following Gillum’s victory in the Florida Democratic primary in August, DeSantis went on Fox News and told voters not to “monkey this up” by selecting Gillum to lead the state. He also received campaign donations from a Republican donor who called former President Barack Obama a “ni**er” on Twitter.

“How the hell am I supposed to know every single statement somebody makes?” DeSantis said. “I am not going to bow down to the altar of political correctness. I’m not going to let the media smear me.”

“My grandmother used to say a hit dog will holler, and it hollered through this room,” Gillum said to cheers.

Gillum, who is looking to become the first Black governor of the sunshine state, has been hit with racist robocalls during his campaign, writes HuffPost.

On Tuesday, some Florida residents received a robocall from The Road To Power, a white supremacist website, that said  “Well hello there. I is the Negro Andrew Gillum, and I be asking you to make me governor of this here state of Florida.”
