Angela Corey Defends Marissa Alexander Ruling

Angela Corey

Angela Corey, the seasoned attorney behind the second-degree murder charges brought against George Zimmerman in the Trayvon Martin case, is also the prosecutor in the Marissa Alexander ruling. The 31-year-old mother of three was sentenced to 20 years in prison for firing a gun near where her husband was standing with his two sons. Assumed to be a case of Stand Your Ground because Alexander claimed to be defending herself from domestic abuse, Corey said skeptics of the ruling are misguided, and missing the point.

Corey claims the Jacksonville mother was the aggressor, not the victim, in the August 2010 incident.

“I just don't understand where just the one-sided story has come out…she was not fleeing from an abuser. A judge heard all the facts and evidence and said that this was not a case of 'Stand Your Ground.' You have to compare what [Marissa Alexander] said to what the victims said. There were two young children there as well. None of the physical evidence corroborates her story. There was the 911 call … and you can clearly hear the distress in Rico Gray's voice. They had a verbal argument [in which] he said 'I'm outta here,' and she said, 'I've got something for you.’”

Details of the incident and case are revealed in the telling interview, but what remains unknown is how Alexander’s ruling will affect Zimmerman.
