A rush hour shooting at an Atlanta commuter rail station has left one person dead and three others injured, police say, in what was a “targeted but isolated” assault.

Officials say Zachariah Hunnicutt, 38, was fatally wounded while on a MARTA train while it was at a station in northwest Atlanta about 4:30 p.m., Thursday. Police say an assailant walked up him and began shooting. Two men and a woman were taken to a hospital with non-life threatening gunshot wounds. A fifth person was injured, but was not hit by gunfire.

“They shot him like he wasn’t a human being. He didn’t deserve to die like that,” Sharonda Hunter, a relative who was on the train with Hunnicutt and his girlfriend at the time he was shot, told WSB-TV.” Hunnicutt was reportedly the father of a six-year-old girl.

The suspect, Chauncey Lee Daniels, was arrested when he tripped and fell trying to escape the scene. He faces multiple charges of murder, aggravated assault, and firearm possession by a convicted felon. Witnesses say the gunman seemed to be shooting indiscriminately, not aiming at any particular person. It is unclear if there was any conflict or any relationship between Hunnicutt and Daniels.

Passengers were immediately removed from the train after the shooting and MARTA officials have announced an increased security presence throughout the system.

“My thoughts and prayers remain with the victim and everyone impacted in today’s incident,” MARTA CEO Keith Parker said in a statement. “MARTA remains committed to the safety and well-being of our customers.”
