Ayanna Pressley Calls on President Biden to Extend Student Loan Pause to 2022

Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley has joined forces with Senator Elizabeth Warren, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, and Congressman Joe Courtney to lead a bicameral effort to urge President Joe Biden to extend the student loan repayment pause until 2022, EBONY has learned.

President Biden can and must cancel student debt with the stroke of a pen. We urgently call on him to act,” said Rep. Pressley in a statement. “In the interim, extending this payment pause will provide a crucial additional layer of relief for millions of borrowers. We can’t turn our backs on these families as we work toward an equitable economic recovery.”

Currently, student loan payments are scheduled to resume October 1, 2021.

Housing and Urban Development Secretary Marcia Fudge said that she believes student loan debt has resulted in a decline in Black homeownership. The remarks were delivered during an appearance on Axios on HBO, which aired Sunday. “Who has student debt? Poor people, Black people, Brown people. We’re the people who carry the most debt. And so the system's already skewed toward us not being creditworthy,” said Fudge.

Half of a 12-story beachfront condo in Miami collapsed Thursday, The Associated Press reports. First responders pulled dozens of residents from the rubble and approximately 15 families walked out of the building on their own. Derek Chauvin, the former cop convicted in the murder of George Floyd, will face sentencing Friday in Minneapolis. While prosecutors have recommended a 30-year sentence, Chauvin's defense team has requested probation or a shorter stint behind bars.

Kenya Barris Launches Record Label

In partnership with Interscope Records, Kenya Barris has launched a music label titled Khalabo Music, according to The Hollywood Reporter. So far, the label has already signed new artists and Barris is reportedly seeking ways to incorporate those artists into other divisions of his entertainment company.  “Similar to how we’ve approached our television and film content, my hope is that Khalabo Music becomes a place where artists are given the space to hone their talent while embracing the specificity and individuality of their voice and sound," said Barris.
