Baltimore Approves $200,000 Police Van Safety Budget

Baltimore officials have approved spending $200,000 for equipment meant to improve the safety of police department vans for the city.

The issue of safety while being transported in police vans gained significant attention after 25-year-old Freddie Gray died while being transported by six Baltimore police officers.

According to officials, the new design will create more space in the vehicle. It will also allow law enforcement officials to access seats from the side of the van and adds bumpers on seats to keep prisoners from sliding. The new design will also provide straps prisoners can hang onto while handcuffed.
