Beto O’Rourke Visits HBCU Prairie View A&M, Fulfills Promise to Student

Beto O'Rourke, Prairie View A&M

Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-Texas) stopped by HBCU Prairie View A&M in Texas on Wednesday night, one of the stops on his Senate campaign, fulfilling a promise he made to one of the school’s students, according to ABC 13.

In two days, more than 700 tickets for students were given away, student government officials told ABC 13.

“I remember this year we had a town hall at Hempstead and a Prairie View student said, ‘Will you come to campus?'” O’Rourke said when he arrived. “I’m following through on that promise I made.”

The school’s student government also reached out to Ted Cruz’s campaign to get the incumbent senator to visit. O’Rourke’s campaign was the first to reply.

“I think it’s beautiful for him to be coming to a (historically Black college/university),” student Domonique Roy told ABC.

Students asked the Senate candidate about student debt, advancement and equality.

“Endowments are not at the level they need to be here. Yet we don’t have full funding to ensure cost is not an object to every young potential student who wants to better themselves by coming to Prairie View,” he said.

It’s been a tight race between O’Rourke and Cruz, with a recent poll showing the Texas representative ahead of Cruz by two points.

“Some show us up. Some show us down. Who knows?” O’Rourke said. “We can win this and it will be up to the people of Texas. Future, fate and fortune.”
