On Tuesday, Betsy DeVos, 59, President-elect Donald J. Trump’s pick for education secretary, stood before the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee for a rare evening confirmation hearing.

She faced a broad spectrum of questions that ranged from issues regarding early childhood education to the Obama administration’s crackdown on college sexual assaults.

DeVos, a Michigan advocate for school choice and vouchers, sparked great debate with her responses about her competency regarding the position, with many taking to social media to decry her confirmation as education secretary.

Protesters, many of them from Michigan, attended the hearing. Among them was 17-year-old Dannah Wilson, a senior at Cornerstone Leadership and Business High School. She had come in an effort to represent “students across Detroit. I just honestly want to know how she feels and responds to these questions.”

“Running on 3 hours of sleep, we waited in line–Mrs. DeVos I waited to listen to you for seven hours. Now it’s time for you to listen to me,” the high school senior said. “Last night you said you were a visual learner which is perfect because I’m an artist. Let me paint you a picture.”

Wilson went on to lay out the dangerous effects of DeVos’ actions regarding education in Detroit, and emotionally expressed how she and her family have been personally affected.
