Black History Month: Things to Do in Memphis

Martin Luther King
EBONY Archives

We are nearing the end of Black History Month and in honor of what will be the 50th anniversary (MLK50) of Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, the city has come up with a number of ways to commemorate the occasion.

The city has launched the #BringYourSoul movement, a new national movement that spotlights Memphis as more than a city of a map, but rather a community of doers, dreamers and believers with a collective soul and energy.

Below are a few events sent over to EBONY from We Are Memphis.

  • The National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis has rallied not only Memphians but the nation. It will host “MLK50” events leading up to April 4, 2017, the 50th anniversary of Dr. King’s assassination.
  • I Am A Man Plaza is Memphis’ tribute to the Sanitation Workers Dr. King supported. They fought to change the course of the labor movement.
  • Clayborn Temple is the re-imagined hub for activism and change. It has re-opened after years of dilapidation.
  • One of the only four free standing black theaters in the US, Hattiloo Theatre is presenting “Selma: A Musical Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King” from February 23 to March 18.
  • ArtsMemphis is supporting two events highlighting African American dance and music.
  • Celebrate Black History Month Through Dance will spotlight black dance artists creating and performing in the Mid-South.
  • Music of the Movement: Black History Show is commemorating MLK50 when the Stax Music Academy presents an original, Broadway-style musical production MLK, WDIA, and the Sounds of the Civil Rights Era.
