A Seattle-area man has been left with a traumatic brain injury after being beaten with a baseball bat.

The Seattle Times reports twenty-six-year-old DaShawn Horne was viciously attacked in an apparent hate crime in Auburn, WA on Jan. 20. His assaulter is an 18-year-old who discovered his White sister spent the night with Horne.

Julian Tuimauga is being charged with first-degree assault and malicious harassment — the equivalent of a hate crime in the state of Washington. According to a police report, Tuimauga was carrying an aluminum baseball bat when he approached the Lyft driver who’d been waiting to take the father and postal service worker home. When he asked the driver the name of the person he came to pick up and learned his sister order the car, he waited in the yard of the home for Horne to come outside.

When Horne left the house, Tuimauga engaged in a verbal altercation with Horne. The driver said he then heard a thump which sounded like “a bat had struck something.”

He said he saw Tuimauga hit Horne in the head twice with the bat. He then heard him say, “This is what happens when you bring black people around here.”

Tuimauga hit Horne with the bat three more times after he’d already been on the ground unconscious. He then took out his phone to record a bloodied Horne lying on the ground as he shouted racial slurs.

Following the attack, the young man underwent surgery on his trachea and doctors had to remove part of his skull. Horne, who completed three years at Eastern Washington University, is expected to remain in the hospital for at least six months.

A GoFundMe page has been created to support Horne and his young son when he’s able to be released from the hospital.
