UN Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali Dies

Former United Nations secretary general Boutros Boutros-Ghali has died.

He was 93.

Boutros-Ghali, who was the first UN secretary general from Africa, taught international relations and law at Cairo University from 1949 to 1977.

He was also part of the Central Committee and Political Bureau of the Arab Socialist Union.

Before heading to the United Nations, Boutros-Ghali held several top positions in Egypt’s Foreign Ministry between 1977 and 1991.

In Jan. 1992, Boutros-Ghali took over as secretary general for the United Nations. He led the world body for the next five years in that capacity.
