A White Columbia University student was caught on camera screaming racist statements toward students of color, the New York Post reports.

The Columbia Spectator identified the student as sophomore Julian von Abele, who yelled outside the campus’ Butler Library on Sunday that “White people are the best thing that happened to the world.”

“We invented science and industry and you want to tell us to stop because, ‘Oh, my God, we’re so bad!’” von Abele can be heard saying. “We saved billions of people from starvation, we built modern civilization! White people are the best thing that ever happened to the world!”

Other students can be seen confronting von Abele and asking him “What about slavery?”

“I love myself and I love my people…F**k yeah! White people!”

Twitter user @Aalanasir, who posted the video, said that type of thinking is promoted at the school through the courses that are offered.

“Actually, by teaching a Eurocentric core curriculum in which students study the modern world through the lens of solely western societies, you are perpetuating the white supremacy that occurred on campus. I appreciate the tweeting, but it’s time to diversify the core.”

On Sunday, deans at the university notified students that the matter is being looked into and condemned the “racially charged incident,” according to the Post.

“Although we cannot comment on the proceedings, this incident is already under investigation by the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards, and we want to assure you that it will be investigated.”
