‘Come Meet a Black Person’ Event Created for Whites Who Hang Only With Other Whites

The Public Religion Research Institute found that nearly 75 percent of White people in America don’t have any non-White friends. The 2013 report also revealed that for the majority of White Americans, their social circles only consist of other Whites. On Thursday, an Atlanta woman will attempt to resolve that racial divide with a networking event.

The “Come Meet a Black Person” event was organized by founder of Urban Media Makers, a network for independent Black filmmakers, Cheryle Moses. The event is specifically geared to White people who have no non-White friends.

“In the Black community, we know of White people who don’t have a lot of Black friends,” Moses told CNN. “But still, seeing a statistic about it just opened our eyes.”

“It’s a great opportunity to start relationships,” she said. “And if you have a relationship with somebody, you are inclined to treat them like yourself. If you don’t have that relationship, then you’ll only treat them based upon what you may have seen or read somewhere.”

“Come Meet a Black Person” will function as a regular networking event. It will also include a cultural scavenger hunt aimed at enlightening guests about the Black community.
