Sex & the City actress Cynthia Nixon says that it’s time for New York to legalize marijuana.
Nixon, who’s running for governor of New York against Gov. Andrew Cuomo, came out in support for legalizing weed, saying that New York is falling behind other states and that Black and Latinos face the consequences of the drug being illegal.
“We have to stop putting people of color in jail for something that white people do with impunity,” Nixon said in a video she posted on Twitter. She added that “if there was more political courage coming out of Albany” the state would have legalized the drug for recreational use.

Cuomo disputed Nixon’s claim, citing that New York’s health department is studying the “economic health impacts of legalizing marijuana,” according to the New York Daily News.
“The simple truth is: For white people, the use of marijuana has effectively been legal for a long time,” she said. “Isn’t it time we legalize it for everybody else?”
