Welcome to the twilight zone: where a journalist who once advised Black men to pull their pants up if they were truly passionate about eradicating racism is now convincing the kinfolk of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. that the president is racist.
On Monday night, CNN Tonight anchor Don Lemon spoke with the son of the revered civil rights leader’s only living sibling Christine King Farris.
MLK’s nephew Isaac Newton Farris Jr. recently stood alongside the president during a White House ceremony honoring his late uncle on Friday. Following the event, Farris told CNN that despite the president’s characterization of Haiti, El Salvador and African nations as “s**thole countries,” the president isn’t a racist “in the traditional sense.”
Lamentably, he doubled down on those statements on Monday. And a man Black America once knew nothing of has just a few days ago has gone straight to the community s**t list.
“We have to be careful before we just — I heard April Ryan say it and she’s correct — throw the label of racism out there,” Farris told Lemon on MLK Day. “And that has to start with the president.”
The nephew, who has likely been making King roll over in his grave for days straight, continued on with his nonsensical speak.
He told Lemon that during a private meeting with Trump and Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson on Friday, he discovered he too was “racially ignorant” — his preferred descriptor for the president.
“Do you know Nigerians are the most educated group of immigrants in the country?” Farris asked in a poorly concealed attempt to demonstrate everyone has something to learn about other cultures — thus the president’s racial ignorance should be pardoned.
Lemon, who is clearly wondering if this man is really about to occupy an entire segment of his show with Uncle Tomfoolery, states he did in fact, know that lovely tidbit. The exhausted anchor then told Farris he is being contradictory and only further illustrating what qualifies a racist: the ability to properly inform oneself on other cultures upon realization of their ignorance — and simply choosing not to.
“Isaac, you have been proving my point the entire time you’ve been speaking,” Lemon said. “If he respected the office and if he respected all of America and all American people, then he would listen to the majority of Black and Brown people in this country who are trying to educate him and tell him he is exhibiting racist behavior,” Lemon said. “He’s not listening. He keeps doubling down on it.”
“Just because the president is not aware of his racism does not make him not racist,” he continued. “It just makes him ignorant of the fact that he is racist.”
Lemon evens runs off a list of racist remarks made by the president, including a statement Trump reportedly made that all Haitians have AIDS and White supremacists in Charlottesville were “very fine people.” But Farris still won’t use the r-word to classify his president.
“How much more evidence do you need?” Lemon asks. “Because even some Klan members don’t think they’re racist.”
By the end of the interview, King’s descendant still doesn’t seem to get it. And despite Lemon’s efforts, he still doesn’t understand why Farris is going to bat for the Trump dude.
Meanwhile, King’s other kin seem to be doing well in their grasp of racism. See below for respite:
