The Hollywood Reporter asked Spike Lee to compare all the presidential candidates to folks in his movies. Who is Democratic nominee Bernie Sanders most like? Says Lee: “I would say the Ossie Davis character, the mayor, in Do the Right Thing.”
But who is Republican frontrunner Trump most like? Says Lee: “I mean, I did a film called Summer of Sam. (Laughs.) It was about the infamous summer of 1977, New York City [when so-called Son of Sam David Berkowitz killed six people]. And there was a certain person who had the whole city in terror.”
Ouch.
It’s no secret that Spike Lee is stumping hard for presidential candidate Bernie Sanders. So it makes perfect sense that Lee would get tapped to interview Sanders for a Hollywood magazine. Early this morning, The Hollywood Reporter released its story featuring the two Brooklynites.
Another intriguing tidbit teased out in the discussion was how Sanders will nab the vote of older African Americans. The secret is: there’s no secret. At least not yet. Here’s what Sanders told Lee:
“We’re doing phenomenally well with all of the young people — white, black, Latino, you name it, Asian-American. And we’re getting killed, frankly, not just with older African-Americans but also older whites, older Latinos. It’s the weirdest thing in the world. And what really bothers me is I spent half my life in Congress helping to lead the effort for senior citizens: We led the effort against cuts to Social Security — we want to expand Social Security; we took on the drug companies who are doing terrible things to elderly people. You know seniors are cutting their prescription drugs in half. So we have a lot of work to do in terms of reaching out to seniors, not just African-Americans, but seniors all across the board. We’re figuring out how you get the message out there.”
