Ex-Facebook Employee Accuses Company of ‘Failing’ Black People

Facebook removed the post of a former employee who criticized the company for “failing” Black people.

Mark Luckie, former strategic partnerships manager for global influences at Facebook, had accused the company of removing Black users’ posts without notice and for indefinitely suspending their accounts, HuffPost reports.

“Black people are finding that their attempts to create “safe spaces” on Facebook for conversation among themselves are being derailed by the platform itself,” he wrote in the Nov. 27 post. “Non-black people are reporting what are meant to be positive efforts as hate speech, despite them often not violating Facebook’s terms of service.”

On Monday, Luckie’s post was removed from Facebook for violating the platform’s “community standards,” something that Luckie told The Guardian was “ironic.”

“Turns out Facebook took down my post challenging discrimination at the company, disabling users’ ability to share or read it,” he tweeted.

Facebook restored his post, despite Luckie not appealing the decision, he said.

“I feel like Facebook can tackle a lot of issues … but when you talk about black people, all of a sudden there is silence,” he told The Guardian. “There are a lot of black employees who express that they feel the same way.”
