FBI Joins Chavis Carter Case

Chavis Carter

The FBI will be joining the investigation of the suspicious death of Chavis Carter. The 21-year-old man was shot in the head while handcuffed in the back of a police car in Jonesboro, Arkansas. With the authorities not suspecting any foul play, Carter's family members counter by saying that he was killed by police who are attempting to cover it up.

He was detained on Saturday night following a traffic stop in Jonesboro, about 2 1/2 hours north of Little Rock, after officers said they found marijuana and empty baggies. The officers searched him twice, handcuffed him, and placed him in the back of a police car. Not long after, police said, he was found slumped over, with his head in his lap and a gunshot wound to the head.

FBI's Little Rock office spokeswoman, Kim Brunell, told the Huffington Post last Thursday, "We've been asked to get involved." The bureau's ballistics experts will join the probe to flesh out the investigation. Defying logic at first glance, Sgt. Lyle Waterworth of the Jonesboro police believes the incident to be a case of missing something on a search.
