In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic “Mountaintop” speech, the I AM 2018 campaign will hold a contest seeking short films featuring personal narratives in order to connect MLK’s fight for racial and economic equality to today’s movements.

The nationwide campaign calls for participants to create a 30 to 60-second video “that succinctly and creatively connects the struggles of the past to those of the present …” a press release announcing the contest states.

Winning videos will be included in I AM 2018’s online ad campaign initiative that is projected to reach thousands of viewers across the country leading up to a host of events planned in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Dr. King’s assassination.

“We are living in a unique time where young people are rising up and demanding change as the fight for equality continues,” said Hans Charles, Emmy-nominated cinematographer of 13th and a judge for the contest in the press release. “I’m looking forward to seeing these short films from those who are continuing to build on the legacy of social justice.”

The films must be submitted by Mar. 9 and will be judged by Hans Charles, Dorian Parks (Geeks of Color Co-Founder) and award-winning filmmakers Shahin Izadi and Madeleine Hunt Erlich.
