Minnesota Police Shoot And Kill Black Man At Traffic Stop

Daunte Wright, 20, was gunned down by an officer with the Brooklyn Park Police Department following a traffic stop Sunday, NBC News reports. The shooting took place mere miles away from the place where George Floyd was killed by former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin. Wright's mother, Katie Wright, told reporters that her son called her to say that he had been pulled over for having air fresheners dangling from his rearview mirror - a violation in Minnesota. Wright says that she told her son to put the officer on the phone so that she could share the car insurance information. She then heard the officer tell her son to get out of the vehicle, which is when the phone cut off. She later received a call from her son's girlfriend, a passenger in the vehicle, who told her that he had been shot.

The National Guard has been mobilized in the city in response to protests of the deadly shooting.

Judge Refuses To Immediately Sequester Jury In George Floyd Murder Trial

Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill refused to immediately sequester jurors in the George Floyd murder trial, the Associated Press reports. The request came from Derek Chauvin's defense attorney Eric Nelson, who argued that jurors could be swayed by fear of what may happen as a result of the verdict. Judge Cahill said that he will not sequester jurors until next Monday when closing arguments begin.

Officer Fired Over Use Of Force In Traffic Stop Of Black Army Lt.

Joe Gutierrez, one of the two officers accused of using excessive force during a traffic stop of a Black Army lieutenant, has been fired, the Associated Press reports. During the traffic stop, which took place in December 2020, officers drew their guns and pepper-sprayed Lt. Caron Nazario. He was also knocked to the ground by the officers, who used slang terminology to tell Nazario that he was facing execution. An investigation into the incident by the police department found that department policy was not followed during the stop, thus leading to one officer's termination.

"The Town of Windsor prides itself in its small-town charm and the community-wide respect of its Police Department,” the department said in a statement. “Due to this, we are saddened for events like this to cast our community in a negative light. Rather than deflect criticism, we have addressed these matters with our personnel administratively, we are reaching out to community stakeholders to engage in dialogue, and commit ourselves to additional discussions in the future.”
