Craig Brewer, 41, was shot and killed early Sunday morning after performing acts of kindness in Gainesville, Florida.

According to The Gainesville Sun, Brewer “had been paying for others’ food and giving out money” to patrons at the Newberry Road Waffle House.

Alachua County sheriff’s deputies said an argument began after a woman became angry because Brewer didn’t offer to cover her tab.

Sheriff’s Lieutenant Brett Rhodenizer said, “The victim was engaging folks at the restaurant, and there was a disagreement with a female customer,” in a statement obtained by The Gainesville Sun.

Ezekiel Hicks, 25, confronted Brewer, left the restaurant and returned with a gun. Hicks managed to re-enter the Waffle House despite a bystander’s attempt to keep him out. Hicks and Brewer began fighting.

Rhodenizer said, “As the fight continued, the suspect took the handgun from his pants and shot Brewer in the head.”

Deputies originally responded to a call from the Waffle House after employees said customers would not leave despite the restaurant reaching maximum capacity. Upon their arrival, police discovered Brewer with several gunshot wounds, including at least one in the head.

According to Newsweek, the incident was filmed on CCTV and the footage will be used as evidence in the murder investigation. A handgun, believed to be the murder weapon, was discovered on the scene of the shooting.

Hicks was captured near the scene and is being held without bail on charges of first-degree murder.
