In a video that has gone viral, 62-year-old Leimome Cheeks of Memphis, Tennessee, can be seen letting a child out of one of two dog kennels in the trunk of her Ford Explorer.

The grandmother allegedly drove for more than a half hour in 95-degree heat with her 7- and 8-year-old grandchildren inside the kennels because there was no space in the car, reports The Charlotte Observer. During an interview with the police,  the youngsters told police there were no vents in the back of the vehicle.  Cheeks she said she checked on the children “periodically,” and they were transferred to the backseats once they reached their destination.

The family had recently bought two dogs, and that’s why the kennels were in the trunk. Neighbors vouched for Cheeks, saying she was “a real caring person” and  “loves her grandkids,” who are “always outside playing with the dogs.”

Cheeks was arrested on Saturday (June 9) and charged with two counts of child endangerment. She posted bond on Sunday and was set to appear at court today (June 11). iI convicted, she faces up to 12 years.
