The grandmother of Erica Garner, the prominent activist who died after suffering from a heart attack at the age of 27, was reportedly barred from attending her funeral Monday.
According to the The New York Post, the dismissal of the mother of Eric Garner sparked a shoving match outside of the Harlem church where the services were being held.
Gwen Carr was reportedly not allowed inside of the First Corinthian Baptist Church, where loved ones and mourners honored the freedom fighter and Black Lives Matter activist.
Erica Garner rose to prominence following her father’s 2014 death at the hands of a Staten Island police officer who placed him in an illegal chokehold as he attempted to sell loose cigarettes.
Erica Garner passed away on Dec. 30.
According to Carr, she was unable to attend the services because of her daughter-in-law, Esaw “Pinky” Garner.
“We would not disrespect Gwen,” Sharpton said. “We don’t take sides with that.”
