A group of Morgan State University students have put an HBCU twist on a hilariously provocative social media challenge.

Last week, social media users and celebrities such as Issa Rae, Erykah Badu and Sanaa Lathan came together to reveal the extents they’d go to for some satisfactory mating rituals in the #ForTheDChallenge.

Kayla James, a Morgan State junior, was curious about whether anyone had taken the challenge to a collegiate level. The limited search results proved to be a calling for her and her peers to hop on an educational remix of rapper GameOva Reedy’s freestyle with the #FortheDegree challenge.

“I was literally searching the hashtags,  I saw it and there were literally only three videos posted. I instantly knew this was a hashtag that definitely needed promotion,” James told Ebony.com. “It took me about 30 minutes to produce the rap, and from there, I just grabbed my friends and a few people outside of my resident halls and made it happen.”

The 20-year-old knows all about sacrificing for the degree.

“In my teacher’s face. Who’s failing, not me?” James raps in her first verse.

The New York native believes she overextended herself with her involvement in extracurriculars and organizations.

“I had to change up my way of thinking, become more actively involved in the classroom and engage with my teachers and from there,” James said.

Now, the clinical psychology major boasts a 3.7 GPA.

A middle school teacher also put her own spin on the popular freestyle with the #FortheGrades challenge.
