Every year Halloween brings out adorable kids trick-or-treating, arguments on whether candy corn is good or bad and a White person wearing Blackface as a costume.
An Iowa school district is looking into a first-grade teacher donning Blackface at a public Halloween party on Friday, the Quad-City Times reports.
Megan Luloff, a teacher at Walcott Elementary school, dressed up as the Black character Lafawnduh from the film Napoleon Dynamite, per reports.
Superintendent Art Tate of the Davenport School District told Quad-City that the district has launched an investigation.
“The wearing of blackface is never appropriate in any circumstance by any person,” Tate said in an email to the publication. “The issue is under investigation by the district.”
In a broader statement to Quad-City, the district condemned Luloff’s actions:
“The district was very recently made aware of these images of a district employee at a non-school related event, and an internal investigation is currently ongoing. The board does not condone the insensitivity these images depict and is very disappointed something like this is now connected to our school community.”
The state is supervising the district because an uneven number of students of color were receiving disciplinary actions and were put into special education programs.
“I cannot clearly articulate how offensive and appalling it is to people of color,” said Linda Hayes, vice president of the state’s Department of Education. “In light of our recent developments within the district, this was in very poor taste, not to mention totally out of line with regard to professionalism.”
NBC’s Megyn Kelly recently ignited a firestorm on Tuesday when she did not understand why people wearing Blackface on Halloween was wrong.
“What is racist?” said Kelly to her all White panel. “You do get in trouble if you are a white person who puts on blackface for Halloween, or a black person who puts on whiteface for Halloween. Back when I was a kid, that was okay just as long as you were dressing as a character.”
