John Legend Deems R. Kelly a ‘Serial Child Rapist’

John Legend is the only major musician to appear in Lifetime’s Surviving R. Kelly docuseries, and he has no problem expressing his strong opinion of the Pied Piper.

The Grammy Award winner shared why he chose to appear in the doc, which details several sex abuse allegations against Kelly, on Twitter, writing, “To everyone telling me how courageous I am for appearing in the doc, it didn’t feel risky at all. I believe these women and don’t give a f*ck about protecting a serial child rapist. Easy decision.”

In a recent interview with Shadow and Act, producer dream hampton shared that she reached out to several artists for the series, including JAY-Z, Dave Chappelle and Mary J. Blige, who all wanted to stay away from the controversial project.

“John Legend was the only one,” hampton said. “I asked Jay-Z, I asked Mary J. Blige, I asked Lil Kim, Erykah Badu, Dave Chappelle…I mean, most people just don’t want to touch it. I remember Ahmir [”Questlove” Thompson] was like, ‘I would do anything for you but I can’t do this.’ It’s not because they support him, it’s because it’s so messy and muddy. It’s that turning away that has allowed this to go on.”

The Roots’ drummer, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, tweeted that he always thought “Kels was trash,” and didn’t appear in the documentary because producers asked him to talk about his “genius.”

hampton has since responded, saying she only wanted the musician to appear on camera because we need “Black male allies” in the fight to protect Black women.

Parts one and two of the six-part Lifetime series aired last night; parts three and four air tonight, Jan. 4, at 9 p.m. ET. Parts five and six will air tomorrow, Jan. 5, at 9p.m ET.
