#JusticeforJanet Sparks After Justin Timberlake Super Bowl Announcement

Janet Jackson, Black Girls Rock

Justin Timberlake will perform at the 2018 Super Bowl halftime show, but some folks are crying foul at the news because they say it’s unfair that he gets to perform and Janet Jackson does not.

If you remember correctly, in 2004, Timberlake and Jackson performed together during her halftime performance, and at the end of their duet, he ripped off a piece of the “Control” singer’s costume, exposing her breast.

Close to 90 million viewers of the game, televised on CBS, saw the performance, and the FCC slapped the network with a $500,000 fine (which was later thrown out by the Supreme Court).

Jackson received a large chunk of the scrutiny despite the fact that Timberlake was largely responsible for the snafu. She was banned from that year’s Grammy Awards show, and Viacom blacklisted her singles and music videos.

Timberlake, on the other hand, received no punishment and got the attend that year’s Grammy ceremony.

At the time, many suspected the “wardrobe malfunction” was a publicity stunt, but both Jackson and Timberlake insisted  it was a accident.

“Justin was supposed to pull away the rubber bustier to reveal a red lace bra,” a rep for Jackson stated. “The garment collapsed and her breast was accidentally revealed.”

On Sunday, following the announcement that Timberlake would headline the Super Bowl halftime show, the #JusticeForJanet hashtag emerged.
