Kamala Harris Walks Out of Kavanaugh Hearing in Protest

Kamala Harris

Sen. Kamala Harris led a walkout Friday with other members of the Senate Judiciary Committee during the hearing to advance the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Harris and her staff walked out of the room followed by three other senators, including Richard Blumenthal (D-Connecticut), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-Rhode Island) and Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii), USA Today reports.

The group left after committee chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) began the vote that would set up a later vote on the nomination of Kavanaugh, who is accused of sexual assault as a teenager by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford.

The voting fell silent when it came to Sen. Cory Booker (D-New Jersey) and Harris.

“This hearing is a sham and Dr. Ford and the American people deserve better,” Harris tweeted after her departure.

Several individuals would like for Kavanaugh’s nomination to be put on hold so that the FBI can thoroughly investigate Ford’s allegations. The vote to move forward was approved with all Republicans voting in favor and all Democrats voting no.

Harris urged for more time to make sure Kavanaugh is ethical enough to be placed on the Supreme Court for the rest of his life. “For the sake of our democracy and the integrity of our democracy, you would think the members of the U.S. Senate would say there’s enough here to push pause.”
