No Charges for Officer Who Fatally Shot Korryn Gaines

It appears the investigation into the police-involved shooting death of a woman has resulted in no charges for the officers involved

No criminal charges will be filed against the Baltimore County police officers who fatally wounded a 23-year-old mother during an hours-long standoff last month.

Korryn Gaines died on Aug. 1 after being shot and killed at a suburban Baltimore apartment. Her 5-year-old son was also injured during the incident.

A statement from The Gordon Law Group said attorneys with their office will meet with Baltimore County State’s Attorney Scott Shellenberger on Wednesday, WBAL-TV reports.

According to the statement, the meeting is for Shellenberger “to advise the family that he completed his monitoring of the police investigation into the killing of Korryn Gaines and will not be filing criminal charges against the officers involved.”

Baltimore County Police Chief Jim Johnson said officers had come to the home Monday morning to serve arrest warrants on Gaines and a man who also lived there. The man was wanted on assault charges and Gaines was wanted on several charges related to a March incident and failure to appear in court.

Johnson said tactical personnel were called to the home and an hours-long negotiation began with Gaines. Around 3 p.m., Gaines repeatedly pointed a long gun at the officers, and told them if they didn’t leave, “she was going to kill them.”

An officer fired at Gaines and she shot several rounds back at them. The officers returned fire, killing her. Last week, family members of Gaines announced plans to sue the county and Officer First Class Ruby — the officer who shot Gaines — for her death. The family claims Gaines was “illegally and unconstitutionally killed.”

Attorneys are expected to hold a news conference Wednesday afternoon to discuss the details.
