On Monday, EBONY reported the shooting death of Korryn Gaines, a 23-year-old Baltimore mother who was shot and killed after a standoff with police.

At the time of Gaines’ death, she was holding her 5-year-old son, Kodi, who was also struck by police fire. Baltimore County police said they shot and killed Gaines Monday after she pointed a gun at officers and threatened to kill them during the hours-long standoff at her suburban apartment in Randallstown, Md.

Now, video footage of a young boy touted to be Gaines’ son has surfaced. And he appears to be recounting the incident from his perspective.

“The police kicked the door down, and then my mom — I was hiding, I was hiding in the closet and then my mother –I was hiding in the closet and then Korryn was hiding in the door,” the child states. “So my mama didn’t want me to come out. So I come out and then I had my camera…”

The boy then speaks some words that are inaudible, but continues to share his account of what happened. “My mother said, ‘Back off’ and then…she then said, ‘Back up.’ So the police said, ‘Please back up,’ and then they started shooting.”

Baltimore County Police Chief Jim Johnson said officers went to the home to serve Gaines arrest warrants, and an unidentified man who lived there. The man was wanted on assault charges. Gaines was wanted on several charges related to a March incident and failure to appear in court.

Johnson said police obtained a key to the apartment after knocking on the door several times. They found Gaines sitting on the floor with a weapon in one hand and her son in the other. That’s when the standoff began. Around 3 p.m., Gaines reportedly pointed a gun at officers several times, and told them if they didn’t leave, “she was going to kill them.”

An officer fired at Gaines and she shot back. The officers returned fire, killing her. According to officials, Gaines’ son was shot in the arm. He was later taken to a hospital and was listed in good condition. Watch the young child give his account below.
