Lawyers from Justice Department to Investigate Fatal Police Shooting

Attorneys for the U.S. Department of Justice were expected to fly to Minnesota on Sunday to investigate the fatal shooting of a Black man by a Minneapolis police officer.

A key issue during their visit will be whether authorities should release video footage of the fatal encounter from a week ago. 24-year-old Jamar Clark died after he was shot by a member of the Minneapolis Police Department early Sunday.

Federal and state authorities have not released footage captured from an ambulance camera, mobile police camera, public housing cameras and witnesses, because they say it doesn’t show the full incident.

Officials also said publicly releasing the footage will compromise their investigations.

On Saturday, Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton said he had asked the Clark family, along with representatives of the Black Lives Matter movement to meet with the federal government lawyers.
