A school in Jackson, Mississippi currently named after Confederate Jefferson Davis is undergoing a name change that will honor Barack Obama.
The Davis Magnet IB, where Black children constitute 97% of the student body, is being renamed as Barack Obama Magnet IB.
“[Obama] fully represents ideals and public stances consistent with what we want our children to believe about themselves. Jefferson Davis, although infamous in his own right, would probably not be too happy about a diverse school promoting the education of the very individuals he fought to keep enslaved being named after him,” said President of the Parent Teacher Association Janelle Jefferson.
If the school receives adequate funding for the name change, the renaming will go in effect beginning the 2018-2019 school year.
This isn’t the only commemoration of the 44th president in 2017. In August, Illinois state legislature voted to declare August 4 “Barack Obama Day.”
Over a dozen schools in the U.S. have been named in honor of the forever president.
