Mitt Romney Finally Releases His Taxes

Mitt Romney

After much criticism and speculation, Mitt Romney finally released his elusive tax records to the American public. On Friday, Romney gave the public a look at his finished tax forms for the year 2011, as aides began stating that Romney earned almost $13.7 million last year and estimated that the GOP nominee paid more than $1.9 million in taxes — an effective tax rate of 14.1 percent. While it is finally nice to have proof of the would-be president’s tax records, there is a slight problem. The amount is about $1 million less than the expected $3 million that the Romney campaign said earlier.

Also, since he would have been able to get his tax rate down to 13 percent, his actual tax records contradict a statement he made to ABC News.

“I don’t pay more than are legally due and frankly if I had paid more than are legally due I don’t think I’d be qualified to become president. I’d think people would want me to follow the law and pay only what the tax code requires.”
