The tragic death of a 7-year-old who was allegedly teased before taking his life last Wednesday coupled with over 40 shootings in the past few days have left many in Detroit wondering what the solution can be. Despite Gov. Rick Snyder’s anti-bullying legislation signed last December, law enforcement’s role has been fairly hazy. But Detroit Free Press columnist Rochelle Riley believes their role is clear.
Citing a memo from City Council President Pro Tem Gary Brown that claims only a third of the city’s cops stand on patrol, Riley called for more officers to be on streets. “It doesn't take a criminal justice expert to grasp that Detroit needs more police on the streets — where bad guys and good people and children can see them,” she wrote. “A visible presence can be a powerful force.”
