According to Oklahoma news station KFOR 4, Lewis’ girlfriend Kamri Pollock, 18, and a friend ran to a neighbor’s house, saying her boyfriend got physical with her. Pollock reportedly told police dispatchers that her “boyfriend just flipped out … I have no idea what’s going on.”
Authorities said Lewis stripped naked, started running and climbed a fence when police arrived. Witnesses said Lewis threw drugs and jumped fences before breaking into a stranger’s home. A scuffle broke out as Sgt. Milo Box and officer Denton Scherman entered the home.
Edmond police spokeswoman Jenny Wagon said a taser was used to subdue Lewis as the physical altercation escalated. After they failed to get Lewis to comply, Wagon said, at least one officer fired a handgun. “We know a Taser was deployed because we found the probes in the suspect,” Wagon said in a statement obtained by The Guardian.
One of the officers injured during the incident was taken to a hospital, treated for a head injury and released.
Lewis was pronounced dead hours after he was rushed to the hospital. According to the online news outlet, Lewis suffered “multiple gunshot wounds,” and a final autopsy report was “pending.”
Neither officer involved in the shooting wore a body camera during the incident.
The teen’s mother discussed the shooting with KFOR 4. “He was not armed,” Vicki Lewis said. “He didn’t deserve to die the way that he did. He didn’t deserve to die, period.”
Vicki denied knowing that her son was involved with Pollock and said that she had no plans to speak with her about the incident. “I don’t think it is appropriate at this time to even have any contact with that young lady right now.”
