Corey Ballentine, a New York Giants 2019 sixth-round draft pick, was injured in an off-campus shooting in Topeka, Kansas, early Sunday.

According to PEOPLE, Ballentine, 23, sustained a nonlife-threatening gunshot wound after a shooter opened fire on the Washburn University senior and teammate Dwane Simmons, 23, who died from his injuries.

The university confirmed Simmons’ death in a statement released Sunday.

Washburn head football coach Craig Schruig said Simmons was “one of the most energetic and well-liked players I have ever coached at Washburn,” in the statement. “Dwane’s infectious smile and love for football and his teammates was truly inspirational. Our prayers of healing go out to his family, his parents Navarro and Yasmine Simmons and Chaquilla Williams.”

Baellentine, who the school says is its first player selected in the NFL draft since 2008, took to Instagram celebrating his accomplishment hours before the shooting. “It’s all a crazy dream until you do it. I can’t even explain the emotions I have right now.”

The university postponed a press conference with Ballentine scheduled for Monday afternoon in the wake of the shooting.
