Northwestern University Cancels ‘Black House’ Integration Plans

Proposed changes to Northwestern University’s Black House have been canceled.

School administrators made the announcement Monday during the third Black House listening session. For more than four decades, the Black House has served as a safe space for African American students who attend Northwestern.

“We need to figure out what to do with this space to enhance what we have for our Black students,” Vice President for Student Affairs Patricia Telles-Irvin said during the meeting. “I thank everyone who has spoken.”

Earlier this year, school administrators announced plans to move some Campus Inclusion and Community administrative offices into the Black House. The news prompted mass protest from the school’s African American student population and its Black Alumni Association.
