NYPD Officer Puts Pregnant Woman in Chokehold

With embers of the firestorm that followed the death of Staten Island man Eric Garner still burning, officials are investigating another alleged chokehold incident. This time involving a Brooklyn woman who is seven months pregnant.

People Organizing and Working for Empowerment and Respect (POWER), an advocacy group housed in the borough’s East New York neighborhood, released photos Monday that showed Rosan Miller in what looks to be a chokehold — with the arm of a police officer around her neck.

The incident unfolded after authorities went to Miller’s Brooklyn home over the weekend. The 27-year-old was grilling on a public sidewalk — which is illegal. According to the Daily News, a scuffle broke out that led to the arrest of her husband, Moses Miller, who has been charged with resisting arrest and obstruction of justice, and her brother, John Miller. He faces charges of harassment and obstruction.

Miller did not suffer any injuries during the altercation, but was given a summons for disorderly conduct.

Charles Barron, a former city councilman, has since called police to “expedite” the family’s release, the Daily News reported.

“This was all over a grill,” Barron said. “This is about grilling in front of her house.”

The New York Police Department has restricted the use of chokeholds as a form of restraint since 1993.

In addition to the Garner death, another incident of alleged police brutality by the NYPD made headlines last week. A viral video shows Jahmiel Cuffee being beaten by an officer after reportedly resisting arrest after an officer observed him rolling a joint outside his Beford Stuyvesant home.
