One Year Later: Justice for Tamir Rice

Officers in Tamir Rice Shooting Escape Charges

Nov. 23 will mark one year since 12-year-old Tamir Rice was gunned down by a Cleveland police officer while playing near his home.

The investigation has been unfruitful, with the two officers involved escaping criminal charges thus far despite Rice being shot less than 2 seconds after they arrived on the scene.

In memory of Rice, and as a call for justice, activists, residents and concerned citizens will host a series of events this weekend.

“A year has gone by with no justice for Tamir Rice,” said Elle Hearns, #BlackLivesMatter strategic partner and GetEQUAL Central Region Coordinator. Though there are incredible deficiencies in the ways that his murder has been handled by the justice system, this weekend is about honoring Tamir Rice’s life and supporting his family.  The organizing demanding justice for Tamir Rice is much more than a moment in time.”

Activists are putting pressure on county prosecutor Tim McGinty, who waited months before presenting evidence or the case to a grand jury.
