POLITICS AS (UN)USUAL:This Week in Politics

A look at the political week that was…

  • President Obama finally stands firmly on the side of equality and says, “I think same sex couples should be able to get married.”  There are still a few kinks to work out in terms of ensuring equality nationwide but Obama is the first sitting president do take such a stand.  So for that, thank you Mr. President.
  • Not everyone is jumping for joy at the news the questions have already started as to whether Black churchgoers will stick with Obama now that’s he’s supporting marriage equality. It’s too early to tell, but no polling suggests large numbers would abandon the president over this single issue.
  • North Carolina certainly isn’t siding with Obama on this issue, having passed Amendment 1 which not only bans gay marriage but also civil unions.
  • And on the other side of the aisle it turns out that Mitt Romney was a high school bully.  As a senior, he pinned a fellow classmate who he thought was gay to the ground and forcibly chopped off his hair. How charming.
  • The Republican House passed the Ryan budget…again.  It’s the budget that cuts everything for everyday folks and keeps the tax breaks for rich people.
  • And highly unpopular Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker is caught on video explaining his “divide and conquer” strategy to take down the unions and turn Wisconsin into a “right to work” state. Translation: He’s on the side of big business and not on the side of working families.
