POLITICS AS [UN]USUAL – This Week in Politics

Another look at the political week that was…

●      Virginia’s Republican candidate for lieutenant governor says government programs have been more harmful to Blacks than slavery. Wait, what?

●      It’s official, the IRS “scandal” is not a scandal.

●      All eyes were on the Supreme Court this week, with 4 major decisions still outstanding on Proposition 8, the Defense of Marriage Act, Affirmative Action, and Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act, but most America will have to wait until Monday morning to find out how many constitutional rights the Roberts Court has decided to take away.

●      The Supreme Court did announce their holding that “the government cannot force private health organizations to denounce prostitution as a condition to get taxpayer money to fight AIDS around the world.”

●      The immigration reform bill currently being considered in Congress doubles funding for border security.

●      House Republicans passed a blatantly unconstitutional 20-week abortion ban.  The law is invalid under the Supreme Court’s holding in Roe v. Wade which allows a woman to choose to terminate pregnancy before viability, which is usually 24 weeks.

●      Doctors warn that a 20 week ban will have devastating consequences for their patients.

●      Don’t believe the hype around the claim that Obamacare, which officially goes into effect this October, is causing health care prices to skyrocket, because the opposite is true.

●      Conservative writer James Taranto wrote yet another offensive column in the Wall Street Journal about sexual assault in the military.  The title of Taranto’s piece is Sex, Lies, and the War on Men,” which is ridiculous on it’s face because, rape is not sex, only 2% of reported rapes are false allegations, and there is no war on (straight, White) men.
