Rev. Michael Curry Talks Bringing the Black Church to The Royal Wedding

The Rev. Michael Bruce Curry presided over last weekend’s royal wedding, giving a fiery sermon during Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s nuptials that immediately went viral and even inspired a hilarious Saturday Night Live sketch featuring Kenan Thompson.

During a visit to NBC’s TODAY, Rev. Curry revealed that he had reservations about his style of preaching being acceptable in such a royal setting.

“I didn’t know [how it would go over], but I knew that they had asked me to come, and that’s me…so, I showed up,” said Curry, the first African-American to serve as presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church. Born in Chicago, he is also the first American to preach at a British royal wedding.

Curry quoted Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and alluded to slavery during the ceremony, confirming he went over the gist of his sermon with the newlyweds and church officials prior to taking to the pulpit.

As for the congregation’s response to his rousing homily, Rev. Curry has developed his own method of knowing his words have touched the masses, even those who are as conservative as the royals.

“Episcopalians aren’t known for being loud and raucous in church, but I’ve learned to be able to hear an ‘amen’ by looking in their eyes,” he said. “And I was looking in the eyes of people who were there and they were doing quiet British amen.”

When it comes to Thompson’s SNL impersonation, the Bishop let out a hearty laugh while calling the performance “brilliant.”
