Rudy Giuliani’s Law License Is Suspended Over 2020 Trump Election Lies

Rudy Giuliani, the former personal lawyer for former President Donald Trump, was suspended Thursday, June 24, from practicing law in New York state by an appellate court, according to The New York Times

In a ruling released following disciplinary proceedings, the court concluded that Giuliani made “demonstrably false and misleading statements” about the 2020 election. They also shared that “there is uncontroverted evidence” that Giuliani, who once held one of the legal profession’s most prestigious jobs, “[misled] statements to courts, lawmakers and the public at large in his capacity as lawyer for former President Donald J. Trump and the Trump campaign in connection with Trump’s failed effort at reelection in 2020.”

With that said, Giuliani may never see the inside of a New York courtroom again—at least not as an attorney.

The temporary suspension—which could become permanent within weeks—was delivered so sternly because, according to five New York State Supreme Court judges, Giuliani “poses an immediate threat” to the public in that he continues to push the thoroughly debunked falsehood that Democrats stole the election from Trump.

Calling his misconduct “incredibly serious,” the judges noted Guiliani’s tarnished reputation and said his actions “directly inflamed the tensions” that resulted in the deadly Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. “The seriousness of respondent’s uncontroverted misconduct cannot be overstated,” the judges wrote. “This country is being torn apart by continued attacks on the legitimacy of the 2020 election and of our current president, Joseph R. Biden.”

Giuliani, who at one time was known as “America’s Mayor,” is also facing a criminal investigation which found his law office and apartment being raided by the FBI. He can fight his suspension by requesting a hearing within 20 days. While judges say he will likely face sanctions that could signal the end or disbarring of Giuliani from the legal world, the 77-year-old has not returned any requests for comment.

Trump, who’s himself under criminal investigation, spoke for Giuliani in saying in a statement, “The greatest Mayor in the history of New York City, the Eliot Ness of his generation, one of the greatest crime fighters our Country has even known, and this is what the Radical Left does to him. All of New York is out of control.”

The judges also listed off various examples of Giuliani’s misconduct, including his unfounded argument before a Pennsylvania federal court that thousands of “dead” people voted illegally for Biden in Philadelphia.

“The public records submitted on this motion unequivocally show that respondent’s statement is false,” the judges wrote.

Though Giuliani told the court that he would “exercise personal discipline” and refrain from making further statements about the election in his capacity as a lawyer, according to the ruling, the court found that he had continued to make false statements since the submission of the application for suspension of his license.
