Rush Limbaugh Apologizes to Sandra Fluke

There have been plenty of barbs being thrown around as we go deeper into the election season, but media personality Rush Limbaugh sent the blogosphere on fire when he called Sandra Fluke a “slut” on air. Now, a day after President Barack Obama entered the fray with a call of support for the Georgetown law student and activist, Limbaugh has apologized.

“For over 20 years, I have illustrated the absurd with absurdity, three hours a day, five days a week. In this instance, I chose the wrong words in my analogy of the situation. I did not mean a personal attack on Ms. Fluke,” Limbaugh said. “I sincerely apologize to Ms. Fluke for the insulting word choices.” Still, Limbaugh refused to back down from his position on insurance coverage for birth control.

“I think it is absolutely absurd that during these very serious political times, we are discussing personal sexual recreational activities before members of Congress. I personally do not agree that American citizens should pay for these social activities. I believe this is a topic that should not reach a presidential level.” Fluke, who entered the national spotlight when she unsuccessfully tried to testy at a February hearing on Capitol Hill, has since become the public face in the fight over contraception insurance.

With plenty of backlash from both advertisers and the public-at-large, was it right for the President to step in on behalf of Sandra Fluke? Or should Obama have chosen a different forum to express his frustration?
