Authorities say two people were killed in an apparent murder-suicide at an elementary school in San Bernardino, Calif., on Monday, the second major shooting incident in that town in nearly a year and a half.

A school official said the attack was believed to stem from a “domestic dispute,”  that one of those killed was a teacher and that the teacher knew the gunman. Two others, described by authorities as students were wounded and were hospitalized in critical condition. The identities of the victims have not yet been released.

“The children we do not believe were targeted. The suspect had come to the classroom to visit,” San Bernardino Police Capt. Ron Maass said at a news conference.

San Bernardino Police Chief Jerrod Burguan tweeted the information Monday afternoon. The identities of the assailant and victim are unclear as is the motive of the suspect. The shooting took place in the middle of the school day at North Park Elementary School as students were attending classes. There are about 600 students in the school from kindergarten through sixth grades.

The students at the school were bused to safety at California State University’s San Bernardino campus, several miles away. Television news footage showed students, escorted by police officers, walking off campus hand-in-hand.

The city of 216,000 was the site of the December 2015 terror attack that killed 14 people and wounded 22 others at a meeting of San Bernardino County employees. Husband-and-wife shooters Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik were killed in a gunbattle with authorities later that day
