Attorneys for Sandra Bland’s family say a settlement has been reached in their civil suit more than a year after her death in police custody. The conditions also include changes to the treatment of inmates at the jail where she was held.

Cannon Lambert, the lawyer for Bland’s family, told ABC13 Eyewitness News Chicago the wrongful death lawsuit was settled for $1.9 million. The settlement with the Texas Department of Public Safety was capped by state statutes and will pay $100,000. The Waller County jail will pay $1.8 million.

As a condition of the settlement, Bland’s mother, Geneva Reed-Veal, said the Waller County jail must provide emergency nurses for all shifts; use automated electronic sensors to ensure accurate and timely cell checks; and activity seek the passage of additional state funds for for jail intaking, inmate screening, training and additional jail support.

Forsensic investigators determined that Bland had committed suicide while being held in a jail cell in July 2015. But it was unclear according to the documentation of the case whether or not she was suicidal at the time.

EBONY.com spoke with Reed-Veal back in January about the loss of her daughter. She said she remained skeptical about the details of what happened to Bland and that she did not believe she would have killed herself. “There’s still a lot of unanswered questions for us,” she said.

A judge ordered the FBI to release a report of the Texas Rangers’ investigation into Bland’s death to the family earlier this year.
